Dear Colleagues,
30th National Congress on Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (YAEM
2010) will be held at the Sabanci University Campus in Istanbul on June 30 -
July 2, 2010. The first YAEM Congress was held at Boğaziçi University in
February 1975. Many years and Congresses have passed since then and now we have
reached the 30th YAEM Congress. We are grateful to all the individuals,
organizers, host universities, public and private sector and non-profit
organizations, which have contributed to the YAEM Congresses for the past 35
years.
The world is in the midst of a rapid change. We are faced with new policies, new
processes, new organizational structures, and new ways of doing business, among
others. It is true that these developments affect the Industrial Engineering /
Operations Research (IE/OR) fields, but they also provide the IE/OR community
with opportunities to influence these developments. The widening scope and
increasing accuracy of data collection, storage and retrieval observed both in
the public and business sectors, and the amazingly fast developments in hardware
and software technologies open up new avenues for IE/OR researchers and
practitioners alike to develop new methodologies, new models and solution
procedures never attempted before to overcome the problems we face today. We
hope to see evidence of work along these lines in this Congress.
The number of Industrial Engineering Departments has shown a rapid increase in
Turkey in the last years both in public and in private universities. The numbers
of students and graduates have shown a fast increase. Achieving a comparable
development in the qualitative dimension is a more challenging task. Reaching
world-class level of education and research, and securing continuous improvement
of the Industrial Engineering Departments will have a direct positive impact on
the quality of IE/OR graduates and our profession. Subsequently, there will also
be an increase in the contribution of our profession to the Turkish economy. In
return, this will help us to attract better students to IE/OR community.
YAEM Congresses have traditionally been a platform for sharing research results
and a catalyzer for new research ideas and collaboration. The inclusion of the
systematic discussion of educational issues in the agenda of YAEM Congresses
will serve as a facilitator to increase the qualitative dimension of IE/OR
education.
Presentation of results from research collaborations with industry has always
been at the core of the YAEM Congresses, and will again be at YAEM 2010. We will
strongly emphasize this theme at the Congress and are planning to establish a
series of dedicated sessions for that purpose.
The Practice Award and the Student Project Competition have become traditional,
and will also be part of YAEM 2010. We strongly urge those in industry to
encourage your company and the companies you work with to participate in the
Practice Award process and the academics to encourage your students to
participate in the Student Project Competition process.
The participants can make their presentations either in Turkish or in English.
Although the regular sessions will be bilingual, the language of the
presentations for the Practice Award and the Student Project Competition will be
restricted solely to Turkish.
Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to participate in YAEM 2010. We will be honored to welcome you at
Sabanci University.
Best Regards,
Prof. Dr. Gündüz Ulusoy
Congress Chair
